The Ceremony
B’rit Milah (Bris) is our birth ceremony to welcome a Jewish baby boy into the covenant of our people.
Providing both a physical connection through circumcision, and a spiritual connection through blessings and naming, B’rit Milah ties us to 4,000 years of Jewish tradition.
Typically, the B'rit Milah ceremony includes the steps listed on this page. However, while there are traditional elements to the service, we will discuss options and tailor the day to your sensibilities. My goal is to make the ceremony meaningful and memorable for your family.
These Elements May Be Part of Your B'rit Milah
1
Baby is Introduced
Typically one or more honorees, called “kvatter,” brings the baby into the room and a prayer is recited.
2
Candle Lighting (Optional)
If you would like to have candle-lighters, any number of people can be invited for this honor.
3
Brief Comments From Me
I will share insight on the meaning of the ceremony.
4
The Chair of Elijah
According to tradition, the spirit of Elijah the Prophet is invited to every B’rit Milah ceremony. A special chair is designated in his honor.
5
The Ritual of Circumcision
The parents grant agency to me to proceed. A person of honor, called a sandek, accompanies the baby to provide comfort. I will recite a short prayer while performing the ritual circumcision.
6
Parents Blessing
The parents recite a prayer welcoming their son into the Jewish community.
7
Naming Blessing
Your baby receives his Hebrew name. This name connects him to his Jewish heritage and may honor a deceased family member. Parents may discuss the meaning of the name they've chosen. Grandparents, or other participants, may share readings or comments.
8
Mi Shebeirach
We pray for the baby's quick healing and good health.
9
Birkat Kohanim
We say an ancient blessing expressing our hopes for your baby.
10
Shehecheyanu
We express gratitude for being alive at this special time.
11
Motzi Blessing Before Festive Meal
Family and friends come together to mark the occasion with a celebratory meal.
